April 2011

There’s a widely held belief that if you’re not on Twitter and Facebook, you’re not expanding your following. Social networking is crucial to reaching out and touching the lives of your listeners in ways that you simply can’t do during your show. I believe that’s only partially true. If you’re not putting your personality into your tweets and status updates, you may as well stay signed off!

A morning man I follow posts a status update that says, “(Name) is on the air at (station)” each and every mind-numbing morning. There is never a mention of the weather, the news, anything in entertainment or about him or his views; it’s the exact same thing, day after day. It’s boring and it gives the impression that he is boring.

Another morning man I know uses his tweets and updates much more effectively. He happens to be extremely clever and his status updates often inspire a good laugh. He’s Gary Connors of The Eagle, a Native community radio station out of Forest, Ontario.

Here’s a sample of his status updates:

“HBO announced that Oprah will play a madam in a new movie about brothels. In one scene, all the men look under their seats and they get a free hooker.”

“Last week was the season finale of “Jersey Shore.” Finally the cast can get back to working on their doctoral thesis on quantum physics.”

“Children and radio talk show hosts are different. One needs constant attention, throws tantrums, and cries when she doesn’t get her way, and the other is a child.”

Gary’s tweets reflect his personality. Maybe you’re more of a newshound and would rather share links to breaking news stories. Whatever it is, make it original and authentic to who you are. What you tweet paints a mental picture of you for everyone else so, whatever you do, don’t be boring!
