Reports of the death of radio appear to have been greatly exaggerated as the latest financial figures for Canadian commercial radio show healthy profit and revenue increases in 2008, despite much of the rest of the media landscape taking a beating.

The numbers, released by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission yesterday, show total profits before interest and taxes for Canada's 628 AM and FM stations rose 12% to $335-million from $299-million in 2007.

Overall revenue is also up, by about 5%, to $1.58-billion from $1.5-billion. The CRTC credits higher ad revenues, up $60-million in the past year, for radio's strong performance.
